Work hard now, you'll get promoted. You will have better job, better pay and better lifestyle then. As ordinary person, I once held to this says. Give my all to the jobs, hoping to climb the corporate ladder and having better lifestyle.

I experienced it myself. Funny thing was that I loved doing it previously. Seriously! My wife called it "Loyal to the company".
I started with Offshore Maintenance Section, been to offshore for 2 weeks on - 2 weeks off duty roster. Since I don't have any where to go during my off days in Miri plus I'm still single that time, I spent the first half day in the office assisting my section's task. Later got my promotion to move to manage the Tank Maintenance in MCOT which ended my 2 weeks roster. Life in the office went on until I joined the Operation team and back to Offshore 2 weeks duty roster. By then I'm already married with 2 children.
Having 2 weeks duty roster was good for me because I can give all effort during the duty period, while enjoying another 2 weeks off duty with my family and doing things for our future. Once a while there would be few request from the office to join some meetings here and there.
Unexpectedly I got promoted into Offshore Installation Manager (OIM). Life then changed as compared when I was the Operation Supervisor (OS) & Maintenance Supervisor (MS). As Supervisor, the day-to-day task in Offshore was hectic. Doing lots of analysis, paper work, etc. Being the OIM, daily task in offshore became lesser (due to delegation), but the responsibility increased! No more solid 2 weeks off day. Always got management meetings or project review meetings to attend to which took even the whole 2 weeks off day. I ended working almost the whole month. More time spent for the company, less time for my self, family and preparing for the future.
So when I read the earlier quote, I smiled; I've been there.
I'm lucky because I had the opportunity to prepare "my parachute" in time. Once thing does not go along my planned path I have options. How about you? Do you have your options should you faced similar condition like mine?
